Genres of Art

Genres of Art

Genre
- What it is
- What I like about it

Minimalism

- A very simple art, but usually in large forms, generally furniture.
- It shows a somewhat satisfying simplicity. It gives a sense of tranquility.

Op Art

- Optical effects and illusions that may not be possible to recreate/ make a physical form of in real life.
- Has intriguing uniqueness in every piece of artwork, I like the range of different creations because they cannot be predicted.

Pop Art

- Is based on modern popular culture, a critical or ironic comment on traditional fine art values.
- It uses various techniques to create different textures, it is interesting to me how a texture can be created in 2D using patterns.

Realism

- It attempts to represent subject matter truthfully.
- Has a reliable presentation of real life, is trustworthy. Most artworks show an opinion but it's fascinating to see artwork that has no altered features to suit the view of the artist.

Earth Art

- Uses natural landscapes to create site-specific structures, art forms and sculptures.
- Shows the beauty of the real world. Proof that editing is not always necessary because the Earth is beautiful as it is already.

De Stijl

- An abstract aesthetic centred in basic visual elements, such as geometric forms and primary colours.
- It's like a puzzle, has pieces that are different, yet they fit together to create something useful, usually furniture. Can be created in such a detailed way yet can look totally simple.

Happenings

- Live action shots that challenge the photographer to actively participate in the performances.
- Shows that art can be brought into the realm of everyday life. Shows art is everywhere when looking in the right places.

Kinetic Art

- Depends on movements for its effects.
- Some images can be classed as optical illusions as movement is sometimes seen through the pictures. It is compelling as to how a still picture can show an intricate movement.

Surrealism

- Creating abstract or simple paintings/works of art with a bizarre twist.
- The only limit is the artist's imagination. Each piece of artwork in this genre is almost like a test to see whether the 'out of place' feature can be noticed.

Art Deco

- Aesthetically pleasing pieces of art in any form, often symmetrical, geometric, streamlined and simple
- Can be very detailed but also be completely straightforward. Is almost calming as there are very smooth lines, textures and patterns.
